Meet Gregory Sybouts
“To create, today, is to create dangerously.”
- Albert Camus
1. What made you want to pick up a camera? Do you remember the first time you did?
I never really had the desire to pick up a camera. My grandfather gave me a disposable camera with one simple instruction. “I want you to fill up this camera and then find a way to do it again.” This would become my life obsession.
2. What aspects of how you grew up make you and your work today?
As a kid I always jumped over my parents fence and went into other people’s yards to see what was there. I do the same thing now with images that do exist.
3. Are there any past life experiences that have directly correlated to one of your pieces?
Everything that I create comes from something in my life. I may not say it directly; but, it’s there. People are the reason why I create.
4. Is there any overall message or vibe that you want your work to convey?
To not capture a healthy moment is a sin for me. It is my responsibility to capture the moment in the best possible way that I can. I will not sacrifice our sanity and health for an image. There is always another way.
5. What inspires you the most? What ignites your creative process?
People...People are the real reason why I create. To connect people by an image really excites me.
6. Are there any specific obstacles that you’ve encountered while pursuing your art form? What advice would you give to your younger self?
Keep creating. You are always going to top your last image. It may not be in the way you envisioned it. The important part of it is to just keep shooting.
7. Do you self-promote? How do I get my work out to the world?
I do everything possible to connect and share with people.
8. What is my end goal? Your dream?
To live today. I don’t believe in forever and we can’t do anything about the past, but to give it all today, is all I have. I am going to share that with you in any form that I can. Dreams and goals come and go; but who we choose to be today, last a lifetime.
9. What would you be doing if you couldn’t create your art form?
I’d be a lumberjack.
10.How do you challenge your creative limits? How do you continue to learn and grow as an artist?
Every day is a challenge in one way or another. I give myself an opportunity to live and everything will take care of itself. We have today... Let’s make the best of it.
