Ash Haglund: Divine Deconstruction of the Patriarchy

The desired progression of gender equality sparks the collages of Ash Haglund, who creates pieces both elegant and discomforting.

Their projects are reminiscent of vintage fashion ads with a modern and archaic twist. Their work heals and disrupts, layered with so much juxtaposition and contrast that it’s nearly impossible not to see an agenda. It is clean, depicting a clear-cut future where the experience of being a woman is a fair and straightforward one. Ash Haglund’s work fights for the deconstruction of the patriarchy and does so with beauty and femininity.

Ash Haglund is a Seattle-based analog collage creator. Her creative purpose is to connect people through story and experience. She works to reimagine woman’s collective societal portrayal and turn it on its head. The objectification and oppression of women are to be utilized in an opposing manner. Through collage, Haglund pieces together stories of the female journey, stories that give hope to a post-patriarchal future. Their work is colorful and mobile, there is movement in a forward direction. Her oeuvre is utopic with a dystopian milieu. Through their work, we are indoctrinated into aspirations of hope. We see vivid possibility.

Many of the subjects in Haglund’s work seem to be hiding something. The pieces are secretive, with something to be discovered, If one searches for it, one can find a confession in Haglund’s work. Haglund states,

“my body of work exhibits a confessional of my unspoken fears, my criticisms of the world & of politics, of the patriarchy.”
