5 Secrets to Art World Success

To be frank there’s no one way to become successful in the ‘art world’...but what I can say is that those that tend to get that success are ‘let’s try it’ people!

Working with over a couple hundred artists over my recent years living in Seattle, I’ve noticed some creative common ground amongst all of them that I’d like to share with you.

  1. Say, ‘let’s try it’ and then figure out how to do it.

One of my favorite mantras that I’ve come across is, ‘Everything is Figure-out-able’. Meaning, every single product or creation made by a human started somewhere. It didn’t just come out of thin air...even though sometimes we wish it did! Everyone starts someone, you just have to be willing to fearlessly TRY it. To let you in on a secret...most of us are still improvising as we move forward!

  2. Have not only financial goals, but impact goals and vis versa.

Impact goal meaning how you intend to impact your community with your work. Whether it’s through markets, an online shop, social media influence, galleries, or collaborations. Financial goals meaning quarterly AND annually! Where do you want to be in three months? Where do you want to be in a year? What type of products do you want to be able to produce in a year, and how much would those cost? Giving yourself structure can help give each step you take forward a clear purpose.

  3. I’ve said it a million times, and I’ll say it again. Don’t compare yourself to others!

And if you find yourself not being able to stop, then use that energy and channel it into writing down the things you like and don’t like about that creative you look up to, and ask yourself how could some of those ideas apply to you? Channel it into real tangible inspiration, and get yourself back on track!

  4. Get a planner and schedule designated time throughout the week to spend on your art business.

Maybe it’s one hour a day, maybe it’s a whole Sunday. Someone once told me, ‘and ocean is only made up of water drops’. Set your goals, work backwards, and break it down to daily time management.

  5. What is your story? Who are you as an artist? How do you talk about yourself and your work online and in person?

Telling stories can become one hell of a purchase motivator for local shoppers. Giving people something that they can’t get from store-bought art is what it’s all about! That’s how loyal customers and supporters are born.

Put these five secrets into action, and I can assure you things are going to start to change for the better. Growing your art business is going to be a slow burn for a while, and that’s okay! The ‘slow burn’ era of your art business is the perfect time for you to really dig in and figure out what is most fulfilling for you.
