3 Reasons You Need A Creativity Coach

As a native New Yorker, I was taught to be defensive and assume everything is a scam until proven otherwise. To trust that coaches could be legit would go against every instinct. After all, you don’t need a particular certificate or training to become a coach. But guys...I’m a convert. I am now a believer!

So what changed my mind? For starters, it turns out that plenty of coaches are not, in fact, fraudsters seeking to steal money away from sad, lonely people. Or if that’s the case, I must be very sad and lonely because I can’t stop myself from loving my coaches!

If you have been toying with the idea of hiring a creativity coach, I think you’re making a good decision. If you’re still a non-believer, I present to you 3 reasons you should hire a creativity coach.

1. You have absolutely nothing new you can learn about your craft or business.

To know why you need a creativity coach requires knowing what one even is. There’s a huge variety of coaches out there. Some are more knowledgeable about certain areas of business and entrepreneurship, and others might be more experienced in an artistic technique. A creativity coach can wear so many hats, from teacher to mentor, cheerleader to friend.

You might even look up to a creator who, surprise, offers 1:1 sessions. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll stumble upon coaches on Instagram who also happen to be creators you look up to, or who are knowledgeable about something you are not (but wish you were). A coach can provide a safe, yet informative space for those dreaded portfolio reviews, social media tips, open call applications, what have you, where we are essentially asking for a kick to our ego. But we could really use a trained eye, and it's extra valuable if we really trust a coach in their expertise. A coach is ready to hold your hand through the fire, all the while building you up and making you feel like a superstar.

2. You’re the type of creative who wants to do it all but…doesn’t.

Creators are known for being “idea people.” So it can be overwhelming when you have a million ideas, and then somehow, nothing gets done. I might be projecting here, but even if you have every intention of setting regular planning sessions, they don’t always happen, and you sit frozen in this cloud of frenzy. Cue the entrance music for your favorite creativity coach.

A coach can hold you accountable. When you work with a coach, try and establish a consistent working relationship, and check in regularly. At your meetings, you’ll have a chance to reflect on goals, decide what you want to focus on, and go back out into the world with action items to put into motion.

3. A Creativity Coach will bring out the best in you.

Above all things, a creativity coach will be in your corner. A coach isn’t just an objective perspective, but someone who actually cares. Most coaches go into their field because they truly want to help and guide you in your individual journey.

So you know those icky feelings of imposter syndrome, creative block, or existential dread? Imagine someone who has seen it all before tell you you’re exactly where you need to be, you’re talented, and your goals are attainable. That ish feels GOOD. Find yourself a coach you really admire, and positive affirmations will keep you sane, I swear.

I get that it’s an investment to work with a creativity coach. But the key word here is “investment.” A creativity coach can help with all parts of your pursuits as you take off, from launching pad to parachute. A coach can be the person that brings you, you thirsty camel, to water. You simply must be willing to follow, and then drink that sweet sweet water.

Meuffy

I am a Seattle-based painter, originally from New York. My intuitive art practice contrasts my methodical work as an environmental lawyer. I enjoy giving back to Seattle's local art community as Chair of Living Artists Collective and as a contributor to CREATEUR's blog.

I began creating art to process my questions and fears surrounding consciousness and mortality. Through Meuffy ("MUFF-ee"), my fearless and spiritual alter ego, I interpret the world through a lens of curiosity and whimsy. In my art, I celebrate and explore the connection of mind, body, and spirit. My paintings both celebrate and investigate the physical and psychological connection between artwork and viewer.
